ICFCU Raises $1500 for Area Homeless

IC Federal Credit Union raised $1,500 during the holidays to benefit the Montachusett Interfaith Hospitality Network (MIHN). The funds, which will be used to help the area’s homeless families, were raised through the sale of the credit union’s second annual Holiday Cookbook.

“Our Holiday Cookbook seemed like an ideal way to raise money for MIHN's work with homeless families,” said Tony Cali, President & CEO of IC Federal Credit Union. “As a collection of recipes from our staff and Members, which is then sold to the public and friends of the credit union, the cookbook is a true "community" effort, which is why we felt the proceeds should benefit such a worthy, community focused cause.”

Since its inception, MIHN has housed 111 families, supplied more than 20,000 overnight beds, and returned 80 percent of their families to permanent housing. Their work is funded through contributions and volunteers from the community. Anyone interested in contributing should contact the MIHN offices at 978-840-9500.

Accepting the donation is (l to r) Claire Lincoln, MIHN Secretary, and Arthur Heusser, MIHN Network Director - presenting from IC is Tony Cali, President & CEO, and Judy Kaddy, Senior Vice President of Lending & Marketing.

ABOUT MIHN
The Montachusett Interfaith Hospitality Network has been operating in the Twin Cities area for the past seven years, sheltering homeless families with children. With the assistance of several area churches and over three hundred volunteers, MIHN provides for the basic needs of up to eight families at a time in their shelter at the former St. Cecilia‟s convent in Leominster. MIHN is financed by contributions from individuals and local businesses, receive grants from philanthropic foundations and conduct fundraising activities.

SENIOR CITIZENS BENEFIT FROM GENEROSITY OF IC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION

Credit Union Donates to Computer Lab at Local Senior Citizens Center

At the Fitchburg Senior Center, many of the older adults enjoy taking the computer classes and, with three sessions offered each week, they are among the most popular classes. By learning how to send and receive emails, navigating the Internet, and other skills, these elders are able to exchange messages and photos with their family, and extend their own access to the world.

As with all computers, however, after several years, many of the machines at the Center were outdated and unable to run newer programs and applications. That’s when Stan Skamarycz, a courier, a member of IC Federal Credit Union, and a participant the Center’s computer class, brought the obsolete computers to the attention of Elaine Sigismondo, Senior Vice President of Information Technology at IC Federal Credit Union. Seeing the value these computers added to the quality of life for these older community members, the institution donated two new computers and monitors to the Computer Lab at the Fitchburg Senior Center.

“This is a perfect example of community helping community,” said Tony Cali, President & CEO of IC Federal Credit Union. “The mission of our credit union is to help our Members and our community – but that isn’t limited to financial matters. I am grateful to Stan for bringing this need to our attention, and I’m glad that we could make a difference for the seniors who visit the Center.”

The Fitchburg Senior Center is located at 14 Wallace Avenue in Fitchburg, and is open 8 AM-4 PM, Monday - Friday. Computer classes are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and a beginner’s class is offered on Wednesdays, but pre-registration is required. For more information or to make a donation to the Center, call 978-345-9598.

IC Donates to the Twin Cities CDC

IC Federal Credit Union is proud to donate $1,000.00 to the Twin Cities Community Development Corporation (CDC) of the Fitchburg and Leominster area. For the past twenty-six years, the CDC has set forth its philosophy below by working in partnership with community residents, city government, and local financial institutions to revitalize distressed neighborhoods in Fitchburg and Leominster. Accepting the donation is Executive Director, Marc Dohan and presenting is Judy Kaddy, Senior Vice President of Lending & Marketing for IC.

The CDS’s newest focus is to move forward on a plan to revitalize one of North Central Massachusetts more troubled neighborhoods, the areas north of Main Street in downtown Fitchburg. Our plan combines the efforts of many CDC departments -- Community Organizing, Economic Development, Housing Development, and Homeownership - to generate a renewed sense of pride and ownership in the neighborhood, in the downtown business district, and in Fitchburg.

"Building Foundations for Powerful Communities"

Our Mission: The Twin Cities Community Development Corporation (CDC) is a membership organization led by the diverse resident and business communities of Fitchburg and Leominster. We invest in and organize the residents of these cities to help build assets such as quality housing, good jobs, strong businesses and effective leaders. We envision healthy neighborhoods where residents choose to live, work, and invest, thereby forming a powerful, unified community.

IC FEDERAL CREDIT UNION LENDS HELPING HAND TO UNITED WAY

Credit Union Pledges $5,000 Towards Local Food and Heating Assistance Program

In response to a strong increase in local need, IC Federal Credit Union recently donated $5,000 to United Way of North Central Massachusetts as part of the organization’s ‘Safety Net’ initiative, which provides emergency funding for food and fuel assistance.

“Since its founding, our credit union has had an active commitment to the community,” said Tony Cali, President and CEO of IC Federal Credit Union. “When there are so many people in need, we have a responsibility to help our neighbors. Partnering with the United Way guarantees that those people will receive the help they need.”

United Way of North Central Massachusetts recently found that local non-profit agencies are struggling to keep up with the growing demand for food and fuel assistance. In fact, one organization reported a 40% increase in demand from last year, stating that this was the first time in their history that they will have to use emergency funds to replenish their food pantry. In addition to donations by local businesses and charities, United Way will provide $60,000 in emergency funding for food cards, food pantries and fuel. As a long-time business supporter of the organization, IC Federal Credit Union immediately answered the call.

Individuals who would like to get involved can call 978-345-1577 or visit www.uwncm.org.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE

We have been made aware of a text messaging scam that is being perpetrated in our area. It involves individuals receiving a text message that their ATM card has been deactivated, requiring them to call a specific telephone number and provide their card number and Personal Identification Number (PIN) in order to have the card re-activated.

Although IC Federal Credit Union has not been directly involved in this scam at this point in time, we want our Members to be aware of this situation and reiterate that you will never be contacted by us or any financial institution in this manner and that you should never provide your PIN to anyone.

If you have any questions or concerns on this matter, please feel free to contact us at 1-800-262-1001.

IC Assists Local Eagle Scout

IC Federal Credit Union helped fund signs and walking tour outlook point at the Steam Line Trail located along the Nashua River in Fitchburg. Life Scout, Benjamin Lessard of Troop 41 Fitchburg came to IC with the request back in October of 2008. He has worked very hard in making this piece of history for the Steam Line Trail a reality. “Previously, when you went to the Steam Line Trail, there was no information on the history of this area or the large steam pipes that run along the trail. My project created a self-guided walking tour about the history of the power plant, the steam pipes, paper making and the Nashua River to help educate trail visitors about this part of Fitchburg’s history,” said Ben.

Pictured at right is Benjamin Lessard, Fitchburg with Tony Cali, President & CEO. Congratulations Ben on this great endeavor – yes, the change you made at the Steam Line Trail will make the park more interesting for all who visit – thank you Ben for your hard work and for making this addition for the sake of Fitchburg’s history!

IC Walks for Life

The 16th Annual American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life took place at Mount Wachusett Community College on June 12 – June 13, 2009. This is the number one Cancer fundraiser in New England.

The Relay celebrates survivorship and raises money to help The American Cancer Society in its mission to save lives. During the event, each team keeps at least one member on the track at all times during the 24 hour event. IC Credit Union had the big white tent set up for all team members and friends to visit. The grill was cooking until sunset when the luminary bags were lit for the night walkers. Hourly events, food, raffles, music, and special events kept the event fun and interesting.

The IC team consisted of about 50 volunteer walkers that include employees, members, family and friends of IC. This is the third year that IC Credit Union has had a team to support the Relay. The final numbers are not in yet, but the estimates are about $5,000 for this year’s fundraising efforts. Totals from the IC team for the last three years are over $17,000 raised for Cancer support and research.

Participating in the Survivor Lap is Sherry Sacramone, H/R Manager (middle left), and Debbie Richards (center right), wife of Phil Richards, SVP of Retail.

Part of the IC Team assembles in front of our tent for a picture (left); Bruce Mathieu, VP of Consumer Lending keeps the grill going for all the hungry walkers!

IC Honors Two Retiring Board Members at Annual Meeting

IC Federal Credit Union held its annual meeting Thursday June 18, 2009.

IC Federal Credit Union recently honored two retiring board members. Norman J. Thibault served on the Board of Directors for 58 years. Over the course of his service at IC, Mr. Thibault served as Vice Chairman of the Board, and served on a number of Board committees including the Building & Grounds, By-laws and Loan Review Committees. Mr. Thibault was elected to the Board of Directors on November 21, 1951.

George J. Bourque served for 49 years on the Board of Directors. During his tenure, Mr. Bourque served as Vice Chairman of the Board, and also served on a number of Board committees including the Building & Grounds, By-laws and Loan Review Committees.  Mr. Bourque was elected to the Board of Directors on September 23, 1960.

Pictured at right are (l-R) Anthony R. Cali, President & CEO, George J. Bourque, Norman J. Thibault, Kenneth V. Stone, Jr. Chairman Board of Directors.

Kenneth V. Stone, Jr. Chairman of the Board of Directors, reported on the status of the credit union. “It is my pleasure to report that your credit union remains a strong, thriving and...at the moment, a very busy institution. As many of you are probably aware, IC has not experienced the losses and capital depletion many other financial institutions have and still are facing as a result of sub-prime lending, excessive risk-taking and other unusual operating practices:  We operate very differently from these institutions and are proud to say so.”

IC also announced that deposits increased by $32 million in 2008. Members opened 5700 new checking, savings and CD accounts totaling $34 million in 2008. One reason why Members come to and trust IC is the safety of our insured deposit accounts relative to other investments. Deposits at IC are fully insured up to $250,000 by the National Credit Union Administration, which is backed by the full faith and credit of the Federal Government.

During 2008, Members applied for 260 mortgages totaling $47 million, 403 home equity loans totaling $26 million, and 2900 auto and consumer loans totaling $38 million. IC improved its ranking to one of the top six real estate lenders in Worcester County in 2008, as Members took advantage of favorable interest rates.

Mr. Stone also stated, “In September of 2008, IC welcomed a new President, Anthony R. Cali. Under Mr. Cali’s leadership, IC Management and your Board of Directors have formalized a comprehensive strategic plan to guide our growth in the coming years.”

2009 Essay Contest Winner

IC Congratulates Grace Levesque, our 2009 CU League Essay Contest Winner!

Congratulations to Grace Levesque of Sky View Middle School in Leominster, Massachusetts for being our 2009 Credit Union League Essay Contest Winner! The league hosted a wonderful day at the State House in Boston for all Massachusetts Chapter winners.

Applicants were asked to write an essay that answers the following question:

In 2009, Massachusetts credit unions will celebrate their 100th birthday and a history of “People Helping People”. It will also be a tough year economically for many American Families. What kind of program would you create in your community to help those less fortunate in the year ahead?

 Grace responded in these words:

“With the economy the way it is, millions of Americans have lost their jobs, and there will be more to come. In the city of Leominster, Massachusetts, a pretty small city, you can see the effects of this recession. People need to reach out to others so that we can look back on this as a community and feel like we stood together as one people. A program I would create in my community to help those less fortunate would be “job tutoring.” By job tutoring, I mean something like people who are experienced in their fields volunteering and teaching those in their community who have recently lost their jobs, been laid off, or are in danger of losing their jobs. The jobs that people would be trained in would be occupations that would prosper in the next few decades. This would allow people to get themselves started again, while maintaining a sense of dignity and not feeling like they took a hand out. This program would be effective for all people, young and old. I think that by starting a program like this in our community, people will be inclined to look around and see that others just need a little help to get them back on their feet. Many people would be happy, I think, that they could count on their fellow man to be a sturdy wall that offers support in times of need.”
